2025 Library of Congress Ornament
Our ornament honors the 225th anniversary of the founding of the Library of Congress in 1800. The Library was originally housed in the Capitol Building. Almost 100 years later, in 1897, construction was completed to house the Library in a separate building. At the time it was built, it was considered possible to contain all knowledge within the walls of a single building.
Architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz designed the Italian Renaissance style building to feature a round circular domed reading room. Their design modeled or arguably surpassed many of the grand cultural buildings throughout Europe and the United States. Though it opened as the Congressional Library, it eventually was renamed for Thomas Jefferson, whose book collection was purchased from Congress as the foundation for the Library's collection. Enameled brass. Approx. 3" x 2.5", excluding hanger. Gift boxed.
