Waldseemuller Map Paperweight
Taken from Exploring the Early Americas exhibit, this fine handmade glass paperweight depicts an image of one of the most historical documents created of early America. Dubbed "America's Birth Certificate," the Martin Waldseemuller's 1507 World Map is based on Amerigo Vespucci's voyages to 1501-1502 to the New World, and is the first map to depict the newly found American landmass, which monumentally forever changed the European understanding of the World. The Waldseemuller Map was created with original woodcut spanning across 12 sheets of paper, to create what you see in this extraordinary paperweight.
This actual artifact and more can be viewed on display here at the Library of Congress, in the Exploring the Early Americas exhibit.
