During the golden age of mapmaking, in the first centuries after the invention of the printing press, ambitious printers issued magnificent maps and atlases that documented European explorers’ first encounters with continents previously unknown to them. Each map is a rich cultural artifact, decorated with fanciful type, extravagant borders, and elaborate dedications.
The twelve maps in this calendar were selected from the collections of the Library of Congress, which holds the largest cartographic collection in the world, numbering more than five million maps as well as thousands of atlases, globes, and other cartographical treasures.
