Eleanor Roosevelt was a distinguished public figure. She served as first lady (wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt) from 1933-1945. Mrs. Roosevelt supported her husband's New Deal policies and was a strong advocate for civil rights and human welfare.  Trained as a social worker, much of her life was spent in service to others.  She chaired the United Nations committee responsible for getting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights drafted and approved.
